Life at Springworks: A Day In The Life Of A Software Development Engineer

Md Amir Hemja is from Ranchi, Jharkhand. Amir holds a bachelor’s degree in Technology (Computer Science) from Lovely Professional University. While he isn’t working, he is seen exploring and reading about the latest trends in tech. He is interested in politics and keeps himself updated on this front. At Springworks, Amir works as a software developer.

Let’s have a look at his journey!

My journey at Springworks –

I started to learn about React while I was in my second year and took up some side projects. One of my seniors was working on web development and we collaborated together for a project. During one of our conversations, he spoke about Springworks and the hiring process. I looked at the internship opportunities and read about Springworks. Springworks had great reviews and the benefits and culture were interesting. I applied for the role and I was hoping for the best.

Within two days, I received a call from the recruitment team and the hiring process was initiated. I had an assignment that had to be completed. Later, I had two interviews scheduled where we discussed tech, my skills and remote work.

Springworks was looking for interns who were in their fourth year and I still had a few months to complete my third year. I was a little doubtful but to my surprise, I received a call that I have been selected. I joined Springworks as a software engineering intern for the Toro team after completing my 3rd year. The entire onboarding process was seamless. Although the company was remote, everyone was well informed and as a fresher, I didn’t have to ping anyone for the next steps. The HR team kept me in the loop via WhatsApp and I was checked on by Kartik every now and then.

The buddy and manager meetings were useful as they gave me an idea of my work, the culture of Springworks and what will be the expectations from both ends. My first day was great, I met my teammates, manager and mentor. Malkeet was my mentor and he kept giving feedback on areas I could improve.

I started working with the Toro team and learned all the new concepts. Initially, I started off with test cases and gradually transitioned to tasks and user stories. I have completed two years with Springworks and the journey has been amazing.

What do I do at Springworks?

I work as the full-stack developer for Albus. I started off with Toro as a front-end developer and switched to Albus recently. There are many things that are new and I am still in the learning and exploring phase. Right now, I work on the bugs, improvement tickets and UI of Albus.

Why do I like working at Springworks?

During these two years, I have learnt a lot and I can definitely say I am a better software engineer today. Everyone in the company is helpful and friendly. I can even DM Kartik about anything without any hesitation. That’s the kind of comfort and cohesiveness I feel here.

All we have to do is ask and upskill. Springworks helps everyone to work on something that they are interested in. I started to work on Toro and I wanted to transition towards a full-stack role where I can work on both frontend and backend. Firstly, I spoke to Kartik about it and started to work towards this transition. I received access to the code base of Albus and started to work on the setup. Many things are new in Albus and I had to learn things from scratch. Starting from Albus’ philosophy to its’ components and Dobby. I explored every single thing. I understood the functionality and what we are trying to achieve here. There is a lot of learning every day. I am really enjoying working on this new project.

The support from my team is commendable. They are there at every step and help me at times when needed. I have been associated with both Toro and Albus teams and both have been amazing. Shifting to a new project has been a paradigm shift for me but due to my teammates, it’s been smooth and easy.

The work culture is something that one needs to draw attention to. It’s flexible and easygoing. I don’t have to do a mundane 9 to 5 job. At Springworks, I can log in, collaborate with my team and work on my pending tasks. Due to this, I am able to own my work. Kudos to zero micromanagement and absolute transparency. My work starts at 9 am and it goes on till 6 or 7 pm. During the day, I take breaks and revert to queries even when I am not online.

I really appreciate the HR team and Kartik for renaming sick leaves to Personal time-offs. It really eases the stress and we don’t have to wait for approvals for a leave. This just allows me to pay attention to other things while keeping work aside for a while.

The benefits and policies here are very useful. They really help in easing remote work and help me to balance things. Workation is something that I really like. Sometimes sitting in front of your desk for long hours and in the same surroundings does get one worked up. This benefit helps me to travel, refresh and rejuvenate.

I have been associated with Springworks since the time Trivia was launched. It’s a fun tool. There were times when we all used to drop our work and play games when people used to launch them. I still try to play when I find the time. Later on, EngageWith was launched which was the need of the hour. Rewards and recognition are something everyone looks forward to. A word of appreciation does wonders and boosts the productivity of the employee. The game changer now is Albus and it is fun to explore and work on xD.

I am enjoying work every day here. Looking forward to collaborating more on other projects and upskilling myself.

Sneak-Peek into my life outside Springworks!

I love watching Anime. So when you don’t see me working or replying it’s because I am watching anime. Tokyo Revengers was the latest show I watched. Travelling and taking a break is something I like to do a lot. I have been to Manali recently and I am planning to travel to a few cities across India this year.
